Upon your arrival, our representative will be waiting at the airport holding a sign with your name and will transfer you to your hotel in Lima. Once you’ve settled in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore Peru’s capital at your own pace. There are no scheduled activities on this first day, so you’re welcome to arrive at any time. That said, it’s essential to send us your flight details in advance so our Mt Picchu by Inca Trail Machu representative can coordinate your pickup.

Lima is known as the “City of Kings,” and Miraflores, the district where your hotel is located, is considered one of the safest areas for visitors. Sitting right along the Pacific coastline, this neighborhood offers stunning ocean views as well as easy access to some of the city’s top attractions. Downtown Lima also has plenty to offer, and it’s well worth a visit if you’d like to explore beyond Miraflores.

Our driver will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to the airport for your flight from Lima to Cusco. Once you land, our representative will be waiting for you — please listen closely, as they’ll be calling out your name. From there, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in San Blas, a charming neighborhood near the heart of Cusco. Feel free to spend the rest of the day exploring the cobblestone streets and historic center on your own.

Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire, and its streets still showcase remarkable Inca stonework standing side by side with colonial architecture.

This morning, we head out into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a region that still holds much of its original Andean character. Our first stop is the Pisac archaeological site, a hillside complex of agricultural terraces and ceremonial structures with sweeping views over the valley below. From there, we walk through Pisac Market, where local vendors sell handwoven textiles, alpaca clothing, and handmade crafts straight from the surrounding communities.

Around midday, we’ll stop in Urubamba for a buffet lunch, giving you a chance to sample a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes before continuing on.

In the afternoon, we visit Ollantaytambo, one of the few Inca towns still inhabited today. Its narrow stone streets and original water canals remain in daily use, much as they were centuries ago. Here you’ll also have the option to climb the Temple of the Sun, a 150-step ascent that rewards you with close-up views of some of the finest stonework left by the Incas.

From Ollantaytambo, we board the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). Once settled at your hotel, our guide will give you a briefing on the following day’s visit to Machu Picchu, covering entry times, walking routes, and a few practical tips to make the most of the experience.

Early this morning, we take the short bus ride up from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Keep in mind that visitors are required to arrive at the bus station one hour before their scheduled entry time, and there is a strict 30-minute grace period for late arrivals. If you miss this window, you’ll need to request a “time extension” (prórroga de horario) directly through the Ministry of Culture, which isn’t always guaranteed.

Once inside, our guide will lead you through Circuit 2, known as Classic Machu Picchu — the most requested circuit among visitors and the one included in this tour. Depending on availability at the time of booking, you’ll follow either Route 2-A, the standard designed route through the citadel (approximately 3 hours), or Route 2-B, which takes you through the Lower Terrace (approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes). Both routes cover the essential areas of the citadel, including the main plazas, temples, and terraces that made Machu Picchu one of the most remarkable achievements of Inca engineering.

After the guided visit, we head back down to Aguas Calientes by bus, where you’ll have some free time before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo. From there, a private vehicle will take you back to Cusco, where you’ll spend the night at your hotel.

Today is yours to explore Cusco at your own pace. The city center is easy to navigate on foot and full of places worth wandering into. Start at San Pedro Market, where locals shop for everything from fresh produce to traditional herbal remedies, then make your way to San Francisco Square and the Plaza de Armas, the historic heart of the city.

Along Avenida El Sol, you’ll find several banks for currency exchange, as well as Coricancha (the Temple of the Sun), one of the most important religious sites of the Inca Empire. If you’re looking for handicrafts at wholesale prices, Pumacchupan Street is worth a visit too.

For those wanting to add more adventure to the day, two popular optional excursions are available: a visit to Maras, Moray, and the Salt Mines, or a full-day trip to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). Both can be arranged separately and are not included in the base tour price.

We’ll transfer you to the airport for your flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, our staff will be waiting with a sign displaying your name and will take you to the river port, where you’ll board a motorized canoe for a one-hour journey along the Madre de Dios River into the heart of the Peruvian jungle. Along the way, keep an eye out for bird species typical of the riverbanks and forest edges.

Once you reach the lodge, you’ll be welcomed with a refreshing drink made from local fruits and given a brief orientation before settling into your room. Built with native architecture and sustainable materials, the lodge is designed to minimize its environmental footprint while blending naturally into the surrounding ecosystem. Rooms are simple yet comfortable, each equipped with mosquito nets, flush toilets, and showers. Most of the staff are members of the local community, including multilingual naturalist guides who will accompany you throughout your stay.

In the afternoon, we’ll cross the river to Monkey Island, home to capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and other species roaming freely in their natural habitat. After returning to the lodge for dinner, we’ll head out on a nocturnal boat safari in search of white caimans — and, with a bit of luck, capybaras, the world’s largest rodent. Overnight at the lodge.

After breakfast, we’ll hike three kilometers into the Tambopata National Reserve to reach Lake Sandoval, one of the most biodiverse lakes in the Peruvian Amazon. A rowboat tour lets us observe the area’s rich wildlife, including herons, hoatzins, cormorants, macaws, and monkeys — and, with some luck, the endangered giant river otter.

We’ll return to the lodge for lunch, then spend the afternoon on the Canopy Walkway, a suspension bridge 30 meters above the forest floor with sweeping views of the rainforest and the Madre de Dios River. From its platforms, you may spot toucans, tanagers, macaws, and other colorful birds.

In the evening, we’ll take a guided walk through the jungle to discover nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, and reptiles. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

We’ll wake up early to visit the clay lick, where hundreds of parrots and parakeets gather daily to feed on mineral-rich clay — an essential part of their diet. After witnessing this remarkable natural spectacle, we’ll return to the lodge for breakfast.

This marks our last day in the Amazon rainforest. We’ll take a motorized canoe from the lodge back to the port of Puerto Maldonado, then transfer to the airport for our flight to Lima.

Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to a hotel in Miraflores. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore Lima at your own pace, or you may choose to join an optional activity such as a Lima City Tour or a visit to the Magic Water Circuit.

Today is a free day in Lima. Take the opportunity to explore the capital city and discover more of what it has to offer, from its colonial center to its renowned culinary scene.

On your last day of the Machu Picchu and Amazon tour, our representative will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to the airport. This marks the end of your tour.
