How Long Does It Take to Acclimate to Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is situated at an altitude of 2,300 meters (7,546 feet), and most visitors do not face altitude issues. However, the starting point, Cusco, is at an elevation of 3,350 meters (11,000 feet). Therefore, it is recommended to spend two days in Cusco before embarking on an excursion or hike to Machu Picchu, as altitude sickness can disrupt your travel plans.

To acclimate, it generally takes one to two days. In the case of altitude sickness, symptoms may include headaches, stomach discomfort, and more. The best advice is to drink plenty of water and rest. Upon arriving in Cusco and settling into your hotel, you might also try coca tea, which can help alleviate altitude sickness.
